3 Disasters That Are NOT Covered By Flood Insurance

If you’re considering purchasing flood insurance to supplement your home or commercial property insurance, keep in mind that this policy does not cover all disasters.

1. Accidental Fires

Whether caused by an accident on the property or a natural wildfire, any damage caused by fire will not be covered by your flood insurance. There could be water damage from the fire department attempting to control the damage, but your homeowner’s insurance policy must cover that.

2. Theft/Vandalism

You have comprehensive coverage as part of your home or commercial insurance policy. This will cover any theft or vandalism damage that happens to the property. Your flood insurance will not cover any damage, even if there is water damage due to the break-in. You will need to have this claim reported, and someone will come out to determine that the damage to your home directly resulted from the theft or vandalism attack.

3. Hail Damage

If your home experiences damage from a hail storm, you will need to refer to your home insurance policy for coverage. In most cases, hail can cause damage to your property, but it will not be water or flood-related. They can cause damage to your roof that, if not fixed, will cause water damage to your home.

Your flood insurance policy is meant to cover disasters that cause unexpected flooding and water damage in the home that is no fault of your own. While it may be required for homeowners and business owners in a flood zone, you do not have to get it for your property.
